Challenge
Long known as a leader in video display terminals, Wyse faced a variety of business issues and the heavy competition in new markets that forced the company to scale back on core competencies to stabilize the business. Seeking an expert high-tech PR firm, Wyse hired McGrath/Power to reinvigorate their brand name and debut their new concept of "thin client" computing by illustrating the uses of their terminals in a PC-like fashion. Major competitors Oracle and Sun joined the "thin client" market concurrently, creating a simultaneous challenge of differentiating Wyse from the competition out of the gate.
Approach
Instead of trying to duel with larger competitors, the McGrath/Power team created a strategic public relations plan that aggressively inserted Wyse's point of view and presence into the competitors' marketing machines by countering their vision for the space. In addition, McGrath/Power used the concept of the "thin client" to illustrate Wyse's corporate turnaround -- a turnaround based on continuous delivery on core competencies, instead of undertaking a risky "new" product line.
Results
McGrath/Power was able to establish the "thin client" category as a viable segment for industry analyst coverage and commentary, expanding Wyse's customer base, channel partnerships and OEM agreements. Staying true to our label as an expert high-tech PR firm, McGrath/Power created a significant amount of ongoing coverage for the "thin client" segment, in vehicles ranging from the Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine to every relevant technology trade and vertical publication.
